How To Get Equipment FinancingWhatever business you are in will require some kind of equipment financing. Your equipment will have to be either purchased outright or leased.Some Advantages Of Equipment LeasingThe main reason for leasing equipment rather than purchasing it is effective use of your business money. If your business is not generating enough cash flow, leasing your equipment requires less money upfront. Leased business equipment can often be 100% financed with no down payment. This is a big help if you are just starting your business or cash flow is not where it should be. A leasing agreement may require one or two monthly payments upfront, which are applied to future payments. Another reason for leasing equipment is the ability to acquire expensive items when your business cannot qualify for equipment debt financing
Leasing equipment also provides built-in in protection against obsolesce of your equipment. This is an important feature when your company operations require a large number of computers or other equipment that is prone to rapid obsolescence. A leased piece of equipment can simply be exchanged when an updated model comes out. Equipment Purchase FinancingThere may be other times when using debt financing to purchase your business equipment outright is preferable to leasing. One main reason to purchase equipment could be a tax advantage.Large expensive pieces of equipment will have a long but defined useful life. The equipment can often be depreciated over the life of the equipment which can reduced a company’s tax bill. Always consult with your company accountant or tax consultant when making a decision to lease or purchase business equipment. Refinancing EquipmentIf a business owns equipment free and clear, the equipment equity can be used to raise working capital. Two common methods to do this are 1) A refinancing and 2) A sales-leaseback.1) Refinancing: Take out a new loan, using the equipment as collateral. 2) Sales-Leaseback: Sell the equipment to a funding source then lease back the same equipment on an agreed upon payment schedule. The sale of the equipment gives the business owner a lump sum of money to use as working capital. There may be times when it makes more economic sense for you to purchase equipment rather than lease or sell and leaseback. If you decide to purchase your equipment, you will need to obtain an equipment loan from a reputable lender.
